The individuality of each piece of hand turned wood by Franc Merkač surprises by its artistic expression and is in turn reinforced by verbal conceptualisation. On the whole, one can say that turned wood is a round affair.
FRAN objects cover a whole range of unusual forms in turned wood. Occasionally , Fran leaves raw areas on his objects as in "Metamorphlings", "Thought Receptors", "Landscapes" or "Space Catchers", etc. He thus creates a direct reference between the raw material and the cultural engagement with it.
On the other hand, Fran creates objects that are perfected in thought and almost float in the suspension of aesthetic reservation as in the variations of "Quadratic Roundings".
In as much as man is distinguished by his ability to use tools, this skill is not an end in itself but, is subordinated by his intent In Fran’s case the technique of hand woodturning is used as a means of making a statement. |
